protect yourself against “presenteeism”
We
all know that productivity at work suffers when there’s high absenteeism
due to influenza. Studies of people who’ve become infected with
the influenza virus show that employees lose an estimated 2 to 3.5 days
from work when they are sick.
Most people who get influenza will recover in a few days to less than 2 weeks. What happens if people come back to work in just 3 or 4 days? “Presenteeism” is a relatively new word that describes when employees are present at work, but functioning somewhere below 100% of their capacity. One of the main causes of presenteeism is on-the-job illness. When researchers have looked at the effects of influenza on people’s jobs, they find that influenza not only keeps you sick in bed for a few days, but also impairs your performance for days thereafter.
