What Is Meningitis?

Meningococcal meningitis, a form of meningococcal disease, is a serious bacterial infection. Unlike viral meningitis, it can potentially kill an otherwise healthy young person within 1 day after the first symptoms appear.

Meningococcal disease can be difficult to recognize, especially in its early stages because meningitis symptoms are similar to those of more common viral illnesses. But unlike more common illnesses, meningococcal disease can cause death or disability within just 1 day.

Many of the people who survive meningococcal meningitis can be left with serious medical problems that may include amputation of limbs, fingers, or toes, severe scarring, brain damage, hearing loss, kidney damage, and psychological problems.

Who’s at Risk for Meningitis?

Even people who are usually healthy can get meningitis. However, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have shown that the risk of getting meningitis increases in teens and young adults.

  About Meningitis
  Consider these statistics:

» Adolescents and young   adults account for nearly   30 percent of all cases of   meningitis in the United   States. In addition,   approximately 100 to 125   cases of meningococcal   disease occur on college   campuses each year, and   five to 15 students will die   as a result. Evidence   shows approximately 70   to 80 percent of cases in   the college age group are   caused by serogroup C, Y,   or W-135, which are   potentially vaccine-
  preventable.

» College campuses have a   greater risk of outbreaks   than the general   population, because of the   prevalence of risk factors,   such as concurrent upper   respiratory infections,   passive and active   smoking, bar patronage,   and excessive alcohol   consumption.

A powerful educational   video regarding the dangers   of meningococcal disease   and the importance of   prevention is posted on   National Meningitis   Association's website.   Click here to see the   stories of meningococcal   disease survivors and   families affected by the   disease.

Because disease rates begin to climb earlier in adolescence and peak between the ages of 15 and 20 years, the vaccine is also recommended for all adolescents 11 through 18 years of age.

The American College Health Association (ACHA) recommends all first-year students living in residence halls receive the meningococcal vaccine. The ACHA recommendations further state that other college students under 25 years of age may choose to receive meningococcal vaccination to reduce their risk for the disease.
