Poliomyelitis (Polio) Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the Polio virus. Progression to maximum paralysis occurs quickly over 2-4 days and it is usually associated with muscle pain and fever. Paralytic Polio is fatal in 2-10% of cases. Unimmunized adults should receive a primary series before traveling to countries where wild Polio virus is circulating. Those who have been previously immunized should get a one time booster.
