Passport Health a national travel medicine and immunization service has been the preferred provider of travel medical and immunizations to colleges and universities across the country.

In addition to employees of multinational companies going abroad, there are also many college students who choose to embark on international travel through study abroad programs offered by their schools.

Study Abroad
If you or your child are planning to study abroad for a semester or a year, there is a considerable amount of planning that you will have to do. In addition to taking care of academic paperwork - such as ensuring that your credits can be transferred from one institution to the next and that you'll be able to register for the classes that you want to take - you should also gather health information about the country. In addition to informing yourself about the country where you will be studying, you should collect as much health information as possible about any other countries you may visit while you are abroad.
Depending on your health insurance plan, you may be able to purchase medication or see a doctor overseas. Many health insurance plans have a fairly restrictive network of international providers, however. If possible, you should receive necessary medical treatments prior to your international travel.

Visit also our Travel Medical Services page to learn more about preventative travel medicine, required and recommended vaccinations, and our customized approach to your travel immunizations.

International SOS Scholastic Traveler Membership gives students (and their parents) complete peace of mind when studying abroad, including worldwide emergency evacuation and repatriation. SOS combines services and information students can use to prepare for their trip and immediate help with any problem or emergency while abroad. The SOS Scholastic Programs are available to International students or scholars who are engaged in full-time educational activities outside their home country. Back-to-School Programs
In Miami, we offer on site immunization clinics for Meningitis (now recommended by the American College Health Association), Hepatitis B (mandatory for any allied health program) and flu clinics for the college community. We are also available to come on campus to brief faculty and students prior to international travel and study abroad programs. Because of our nationwide buying power, our vaccine prices are often well below the market.

Many colleges and universities have now taken a more proactive role in light of the current recommendation by the American College Health Association (ACHA) about meningitis vaccination. ACHA has recommended that all colleges provide information about the vaccine to students and parents as well as access to the vaccine for those students who wish to be vaccinated.

About Meningitis
Consider these statistics:

» Adolescents and young adults account for nearly 30 percent of all cases of meningitis in the United States. In addition, approximately 100 to 125 cases of meningococcal disease occur on college campuses each year, and five to 15 students will die as a result. Evidence shows approximately 70 to 80 percent of cases in the college age group are caused by serogroup C, Y, or W-135, which are potentially vaccine-preventable.
» College campuses have a greater risk of outbreaks than the general population, because of the prevalence of risk factors, such as concurrent upper respiratory infections, passive and active smoking, bar patronage, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Because disease rates begin to climb earlier in adolescence and peak between the ages of 15 and 20 years, the vaccine is also recommended for all adolescents 11 through 18 years of age.

The American College Health Association (ACHA) recommends all first-year students living in residence halls receive the meningococcal vaccine. The ACHA recommendations further state that other college students under 25 years of age may choose to receive meningococcal vaccination to reduce their risk for the disease.

A powerful educational video regarding the dangers of meningococcal disease and the importance of prevention is posted on National Meningitis Association's website. Click here to see the stories of meningococcal disease survivors and families affected by the disease.

Our custom service has enhanced institutional awareness and averted possible campus catastrophes. Just a couple of years ago, one of our affiliates was called into a university to vaccinate students after a star lacrosse player died when he contracted meningitis. The university, in an effort to quell negative press, vaccinated all concerned students at great expense to the institution.

We would be happy to furnish additional information, posters, flyers and letters to parents/students. Please call us at 305-642-9889 so that we can further discuss our services and how we might work together for the well-being of our community.
